Novamont SPA is an industrial company headquartered in Novara (Italy), worldwide leader in the production of bioplastics and compostable materials. It has its roots in the Montedison School of Materials Science and was set up in 1989 with a view to implementing the ambitious project of integrating chemistry, agriculture and the environment. Ever since its foundation, Novamont has been encouraging a new model of sustainable development, through the use of renewable resources for the production of bioplastics for specific applications with low environmental impact.
Novamont mission is to develop materials and bio-chemicals by starting up third-generation biorefineries, providing application solutions that ensure an efficient use of resources throughout their entire life cycle, with advantages for the social, economic and environmental system. Under a special brand it produces and markets a broad family of innovative bioplastics obtained thanks to proprietary technologies in the field of starch, cellulose, vegetable oils and their combinations. These biomaterial properties and characteristics of use are very similar to those of traditional plastics, but at the same time, they are biodegradable and compostable according to the European standard UNI EN 13432.
Novamont posted sales of 145 million in 2014 and continued to invest in research and development (7.2% of its 2014 sales). It has a portfolio of around 1,000 patents. The company headquarters are in Novara, while it also has a production facility in Terni and research laboratories in Novara, Terni and Piana di Monte Verna (CE) and subsidiaries in Porto Torres (SS), Bottrighe (RO), Terni and Patrica (FR). It has commercial offices in Germany, France and the United States and operates through its own distributors in Benelux, Scandinavia, Denmark, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The selection of biopolymers and bio-additives for a tailored-to-propose formulation for packaging applications, comprising material selection and characterization, and consequently compounding of biomaterials with bio-additives derived from other tasks; the materials selected addressing properties mainly for co-extrusion process.
Novamont will also play a significant role in the optimization of the formulations, with the aim of enhancing characteristics in terms of gas barrier and mechanical properties for packaging applications. Novamont will support also partners in all activities related to process implementation and packaging production, strictly connected to material properties; support in dissemination and management issues is also foreseen.
Novamont will be active in WP 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
